With this walk through and around Egmond Binnen you walk through a beautiful polder landscape. You will also discover the oldest abbey in the Netherlands.
Saint Adelbert Abbey
Near Egmond Inside you can see the park of the Abbey of Egmond: the oldest abbey in the Netherlands, although you wouldn't say so. St. Adelbert Abbey, founded in the tenth century, was destroyed in 1573 by the Beggars on the orders of William of Orange. It was not until 1935 that a new abbey was built that still houses a community of monks.
Heiloo
You walk through a landscape of tightly divided polders and extensive peat meadow areas. You will see typical long plot shapes, lush reed strips and of course the Dutch high skies. Along the edge of Heiloo you walk along the Egmonder barge to the north and back to the south via Zuiderneg, Noorderneg and Maalwater, areas that together form an elongated walking park on the western edge of Heiloo. A winding road along beautiful farms takes you back to square one via Oud-Bakkum.
