Smuggling between Baarle-Nassau and Breda

After an overnight stay at the beautifully situated nature camping site 't Beekdal, you will set off through the Brabant border area. A well-known smuggling route runs across the Strijbeekse Heide, towards the fens Zwarte Goor and Langven, which you cycle past. Then you follow the river De Mark. The natural meandering course of the Mark has been restored about 15 years ago, which has improved the fish stock in the Mark. You will also pass Koetshuis Anneville. The building played an important role in the Second World War: Prince Bernhard and King Wilhelmina both stayed there. It is said that the queen heard about the capitulation of the Germans in the Netherlands here. The Bels Lijntje takes you to the enclave village of Baarle-Nassau. It's not hard to see why this area used to be so popular with smugglers!
