A walk through the Abbey woods

Between the Brabant villages of Ossendrecht and Hoogerheide lies a beautiful nature reserve: the Abdijbossen. The route starts at Brasserie Abdijbos near the former Volksabdij, a municipal monument. This'abbey\\\' was built in the thirties of the last century by and for unemployed young people. After the Second World War, the Volksabdij functioned as a boarding school until 1982, after which it was used as an actual monastery for another twenty years. From here you walk straight into the Abdijbossen, a nature reserve that is part of the border park De Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide. You walk through a mix of Austrian pine, birch and elder. Because you walk on the Brabantse Wal here, the path slopes slightly. The Abdijbossen is an ideal area to leave the daily routine behind and enjoy nature.
