Provided by: route.nl
There is a lot of cultural history to admire on the border of Overijssel and Drenthe. Characteristic farms, old village centers with beautiful churches and special mills: you see it all on this route.
Tjaskers
You start in Steenwijk, originally an old fortified town. The canals and city walls date from the time of the Eighty Years' War. Steenwijk was then a strategic place in the battle between the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands and Spain. Near Giethoorn there are three simple polder mills of the tjasker type, the smallest windmill type for pumping water. The tjasker Giethoorn Noord was built in 1970. A nice building to see!
Thatched corn mill
You cycle into the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, the largest peat bog in Western Europe. This part of the cycle tour takes you through the northern part of De Wieden: a cultural landscape created by peat extraction. It is a vast landscape with ponds and ditches, reedlands, meadows and swamp forests. Near Nijeveen you will pass De Sterrenberg, a beautiful thatched corn mill from 1786. Back at your starting point, McDonald\\\'s Restaurant Hardenberg, you can enjoy a delicious ice cream.
