The Begijnhof was built in the thirteenth century behind the city canals. After the First World War it took on a social role: first as a rest home, today as a residential area for adults with a mental handicap. You will also find a small chapel where you can burn another candle. The gift shop 'The house of Miss Sibylle' offers nice authentic and artisan creations, made by people with a mental handicap.

For a long time, the city navigation or Handzamevaart was the boundary between the early urban core. In the thirteenth century, craftsmen took over the lower grounds, north of the city center. The canal became a lively inland port, of which we can still find traces of the quay wall with mooring rings and loading and unloading steps at the Vismarkt.
