Jump on your bike and ride this route through the area around Turnhout, Oud-Turnhout and Merksplas. You cycle over the sandy soil of the Kempen with heathlands, meadows and fens. In Merksplas and Wortel you will discover the beautiful drift structure of the colonies. A beautiful bike ride in which nature and culture go hand in hand.
The history of playing cards
In the very pleasant city of Turnhout, Toerismehuis't Steentje is the starting point of this route. In 1826, Pieter Jozef Brepols put Turnhout on the map by having the first playing cards printed there. The industry soon took off and 'Playing Card City' Turnhout became one of the most important producers of playing cards in the world. In Turnhout you can visit the National Museum of Playing Cards, but the Beguinage (UNESCO World Heritage), the castle of the Dukes of Brabant, St. Peter's Church and the Taxandria Museum are also worth a visit.
