Description
In the mining region around Houthalen-Helchteren you will of course find many remains from the industrial past, such as a mine slag heap that you can climb and a café on the former mine site. But you will also discover a centuries-old castle with a brewery!
My slag heap Zolder
Your route starts at VVV-Tourisme Houthalen-Helchteren, where you will find all information about this beautiful green region. You quickly cycle to the Zolder mine (with café!), where you can possibly climb the mine slag heap for a beautiful view. In this former agricultural region, several village-style garden districts were quickly built in the 1920s and 1930s to provide housing for the influx of miners. Like Lindeman, which you drive through.
Castle brewery
Near Helchteren the landscape gently undulates. Here you pass Ter Dolen Castle from the thirteenth century. The castle was once the summer residence of the abbots of the Abbey of Sint-Truiden. Renovations in the eighteenth century gave the building the appearance of a country house. The castle brewery is located in the castle farm, so be sure to have a drink here!
