Haspengouw is a fertile region with a rich past. The Romans expelled the Celts and from the third century onwards the monastic orders left their mark on the region. In the Middle Ages, the nobility built grand fortresses and castles. Borgloon became the capital of the County of Loon. In the east the wealth is underground: marl. The exploitation of this stone today results in a gigantic network of underground passages, 300 km long.
