A wonderful route along beautiful villages and recreational lakes in the bird-rich polder of the Westland. From the dike along the Nieuwe Waterweg you have beautiful views over the water, the harbor and the Westland.

Ancient places
Your route starts at Monsieur Paul, a brasserie in the historic city center of Maassluis. In medieval Maassluis you can see the Wippersmolen, a polder mill from 1726. You immediately cycle into another beautiful town: the ancient picturesque mining village of Maasland. Here you can admire some beautiful buildings, such as the Oude Kerk, which originally dates from the fourteenth century. Museum de Schilpen is also a picture: it is an eighty-year-old grocery shop in its original state.

Recreational lakes
You cycle through the polders to Schipluiden, a nice village with beautiful buildings. The village church dates from the seventeenth century. A little later you drive along the Wollebrand, which is partly used as a recreational lake but also serves as a natural water storage. Just like the Kraaiennest, it is a quiet nature and recreation area. You drive back to Maassluis along the Nieuwe Waterweg. This connection between the port of Rotterdam and the North Sea was built in 1872. What ships do you see here!

Brasserie Monsieur Paul is a brasserie in the middle of the historic city center of Maassluis. A wonderful base for cycling along the Nieuwe Waterweg, through the Westland and through the old Delft. After a breath of fresh air, it is nice to get off at Brasserie Monsieur Paul. This catering facility has been a household name in Maassluis and the surrounding area for more than twenty years. What started as a croissanterie is now a busy brasserie with a warm, homely atmosphere. In summer it is good to relax on the terrace boat in the Noordvliet. Brasserie Monsieur Paul has recently opened on Friday and Saturday evenings, with tapas on the menu.

This Wippersmolen was built to drain the Sluispolder. After the area around the mill deteriorated due to high-rise buildings, raised traffic viaduct, Wipperspark, high poplars and tall vegetation, it became increasingly difficult to keep the mill running.
