Holly and the Drowned Land of Saeftinghe

It sounds wonderful: the Drowned Land of Saeftinghe. And it is also a beautiful area, where many birds live. Together with the fortified city of Hulst a wonderful route full of discoveries!

Fortified town of Hulst
From outside the city you can still see the old ramparts from the time that Hulst was a fortress. The old centre enjoys a protected cityscape. The regional museum de Vier Ambachten is located in a former refuge for monks, the building originally dates from the sixteenth century. The town hall on the Grote Markt is a Gothic gem from 1534.

Drowned Land
You cycle along the Vlaamse Kreek, which is famous for its orchid grassland. In winter you always see ducks and geese here. Further on you cycle along the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe, the largest brackish water marsh in Europe. Excursions through this unique nature reserve are organised from the visitor centre at Emmadorp. In Lamswaarde you see the Sint-Cornelius, a church from 1873. Through the polders you cycle back to Hulst: in this rural area you can fully enjoy peace and space!
