The West Frisian Lowlands are an ideal area for walking. Here, you can enjoy a mix of damp meadows, ditches, colorful bulb fields, and vast skies. And, of course, the view over the IJsselmeer!
Dolmens
After a cup of coffee at Hotel Café Restaurant de Vooroever, you head into West Friesland. Here you can enjoy a vast landscape, old (linear) villages, and a rich cultural history. In Onderdijk, you can see the Nesboskade, which is part of the De Vooroever nature reserve. On the small beach, you can see old saltwater shells from the Zuiderzee era. Large, flat glacial stones were placed in the sea dike after shipworms began eating through the wood of the old seaweed dike. They originate from Drenthe dolmens!
IJsselmeer
West Friesland belonged to Frisian territory for a long time during the Middle Ages, as the inhabitants did not wish to submit to the Counts of Holland. Frisian influence can be seen in the many authentic stolpboerderijen, among other things. There are also many bulb fields here that bloom profusely in the spring; Wervershoof is home to quite a few bulb growers. Along the IJsselmeer, you can enjoy panoramic views over the water and get a breath of fresh air. You walk back to your starting point via De Hoop windmill.
