Walking along the Reeuwijkse Plassen

Your route starts today at Mercatu Osteria. The Reeuwijkse Plassen are a beautiful nature reserve just north of Gouda, and they're within easy reach. Put on your walking shoes and come experience the natural beauty for yourself. Reeuwijk is also a lovely town. You'll see several historic buildings and farms here. Several charming drawbridges span the wide canal. Further on, it's pleasant to stroll through green and quiet streets. A little later, you'll walk along the car-free dike that lies in the middle of the lakes. From here, you'll have beautiful views of the lakes and reed beds. The Reeuwijkse Plassen were created in the eighteenth century by peat extraction, as evidenced by the rectangular layout. Many birds like to perch on the water; the best way to admire them is with binoculars.
