At Millingen aan de Rijn, the Rhine breaks through the moraines of Montferland and the Rijk van Nijmegen region. This water-rich region is known as the Gelderse Poort (Gelderland Gate). Both the wooded and hilly area east of Nijmegen and the Ooijpolder are popular with hikers and cyclists. The route first leads through the flat polder landscape, then climbs the moraine near Nijmegen, ending at the edge of the centuries-old Reichswald forest.
