The New Dutch Waterline
Hotel Restaurant Het Rechthuis in Muiderberg forms the starting point of this route. From here you can be in the fortified city of Muiden in no time. In this historic city you will find various buildings of the New Dutch Waterline, such as the Muizenfort and the famous Muiderslot. This historic defense line with all kinds of forts was built in 1815 to better protect the country in wartime. You will also cycle across the imposing sea lock of Muiden, where beautiful ships regularly enter. From here you set course in the direction of Diemen and then continue to Monnickendam and Volendam through the polders.

Rest in Purmerend
After that it is only a short bike ride through Edam and further to the end point in Purmerend.

The Katwouder Mill
Just outside Volendam you can take a look at the Katwoudermolen. This mill drains the surrounding polders and meadows. The mill was built here around 1649 and put into use around 1650. The mill was restored in 1986, with a new hood with blades installed.

End the beautiful Zuiderzee route with the last stage of this tour.

Vesting Muiden

Old Dutch
1398 AD Gooise Meren
http://www.muidenvesting.nl

The fortified town of Muiden is home to a number of important buildings of the New Dutch water line: the Muizenfort, depots, the Muiderslot, restaurant Fort H and large bombproof barracks. The boat to Pampus also leaves from Muiden.

Kustbatterij bij Diemerdam

1111PR Diemen
http://www.forten.info

Fort Diemerdam is part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. It is an open coastal battery and therefore looks different from other fortresses; actually the complex should not even be called a fort. "Fort Diemerdam" is therefore a name that originated in popular speech. The coastal battery has two official names: 'Werk aan het IJ for Diemerdam' and 'Coastal battery at Diemerdam'. The fort is slightly hidden on the IJmeer with a view of Pampus, the coastal battery at Durgerdam and IJburg.

Museum De Speeltoren

This tower of the Onze Lieve Vrouwe or Kleine Kerk dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. As early as 1350, mention was made of a church or chapel on this site. The church itself was demolished in 1882, the stone foundation was rebuilt in 2006-2007. The slender late Gothic tower bears a carillon from 1561, cast by Pieter van de Ghein from Mechelen. Later the chimes were expanded considerably, which is also the reason that some of the bells hang outside the open lantern. In 1972 a local resident discovered that the tower was in danger of falling, fortunately the danger could be averted in time.

De Waegh Monnickendam

1141 AZ Waterland

Waegh is an old Dutch word for weighing house. There was already a Waegh building in Monnickendam in 1382. The Waegh was destroyed by fire in 1666. The current Waegh dates from 1668, built from the remains of its predecessor. The Waegh was the economic center of the city and in fact had two functions; the Waegh building (inside) and the Beurs (outside under the roof). The building was used for weighing and trading butter, cheese and grains. The original balance sheets are another nice detail from that time. The upper room served as the meeting room for the councilors, which consisted of four mayors and various councilors.

De Katwoudermolen

Kathammer
B-1145 Waterland

The Katwoudermolen drains the polder Katwoude-Hogendijk and a meadow area to the north of the Zeddeweg. The mill is located near the southern edge of Volendam. The first windmill for the Katwoude polder was built in 1649 and opened around 1650. A heavy inland barber that discharged into the Zuiderzee via a drainage sluice. By digging the barge canal from Edam to Monnickendam in 1663, the 689 hectare polder Katwoude was divided in two. The eastern part, Hogedijk, was drained by the old paddlewheel mill with a radius of 26.15 m and a paddle wheel with a diameter of 6.14 m and a width of 38 cm. For Lagendijk, the separated western part of 139 ha, a new paddle wheel mill was built in 1665 on the canal with a radius of 19.75 m.
