Zuiderzee route stage 5: From Harderwijk to Muiderberg

  • The Netherlands
  • Gelderland
  • Harderwijk
  • 64.47 km (Approximately 03:47 u)
  • Cycling route 747483
The fifth part of the Zuiderzee route leads you along the banks of the Veluwerandmeren. You will cross Gelderland, Utrecht and eventually end in North Holland. Along the way, you can see historical sites that are all about water.

On to the fishing village of Spakenburg
The Beach hotel Monopole in the old Hanseatic city of Harderwijk forms the starting point of this stage. From here you cycle along the Veluwerandmeren, the Wolderwijd, the Nuldernauw and the Nijkerkernauw to Spakenburg. This former fishing village was located before the construction of the Afsluitdijk on the Zuiderzee. You can still find all kinds of monumental buildings and places here, such as the old fish auction and the fish smokehouse. Part of Spakenburg is a protected village view, so there is plenty to see here. On the way to Spakenburg you can also take a look at the Putter steam pumping station and the Arkemheen steam pumping station. These steam pumping stations kept the surrounding polders dry for a long time. At extreme water levels, the pumping stations are still put into operation.

Hotel Restaurant Het Rechthuis
Via Huizen you cycle to the end point in Muiderberg. There you can settle down at Hotel Restaurant Het Rechthuis to chat with a snack and a drink. Spending the night is of course also possible here.

Fortified city of Naarden
On the last part of this route you will pass Naarden. This historic fortified city is known for its special star shape with double walls, gatehouses and bastions dating from the 17th century. Take a look at Naarden to get acquainted with the city's military past and then immediately enjoy all the fun.

Continue your journey with stage 6 of the Zuiderzee route.
