Description
On the third stage of the Zuiderzee Route , you'll cycle across the border from Friesland to Overijssel. Part of the route follows the edge of the IJsselmeer, and the remainder takes you past "new land" reclaimed from the Zuiderzee.
Sights along the water
Start your day leisurely with a cup of coffee at Hotel Gaasterland and then hop on your bike towards the IJsselmeer. The first part of the route takes you through small Frisian villages just a stone's throw from the lake, such as Oudemirdum. Along the way, you'll pass the Mirnser Klif and the Oudemirdumer Klif. At the latter, you'll find a lookout point with a magnificent view of the IJsselmeer. Take some time to enjoy it. A little further on, you can visit the Ir DF Woudagemaal, a historic steam pumping station and UNESCO World Heritage site, and its accompanying visitor center.
Weerribben-Wieden National Park
Then you'll cycle straight through the polders to Weerribben-Wieden National Park, the largest lowland peat bog in Western Europe. Unwind in this area full of vast reed beds, ponds, ditches, and swamp forests. Finally, you'll arrive at Hotel Zwartewater in Zwartsluis. Enjoy a pleasant end to your day here.
Mill De Foeke
In the reed beds on the edge of the Wieden nature reserve, you'll find the small De Foeke windmill. Similar windmills used to be found throughout this region to drain peat bogs. This kept the peat drying in the peat fields dry. From the early 20th century, peat extraction ceased, and so the tjasker windmills disappeared from the landscape.
