Two ancient castles
Train station Heemskerk is the starting point of this route. From here you walk to the edge of Heemskerk, where you can take a look at the beautiful Slot Assumburg. This castle probably dates back to the 13th century and it has long been a noble residence. Behind the castle you will find a historic garden that was inspired by the garden that was here around the year 1700. A few kilometers further you will find the second castle on this route: Marquette. This castle was also built in the 13th century. This structure was part of a long series of castles used for defense during the West Frisian Wars.

Walking through the dunes
A stone's throw from Heemskerk you will find a quiet nature reserve full of vast valleys that are bordered by parabolic dunes. Set course for the Heemskerk beach if you haven't finished walking after this trip. Here you can enjoy the nature around you while walking through the sand. Assumburg Castle probably dates from the 13th century and is named after the hamlet of Assum between Heemskerk and Uitgeest. The castle has been a noble residence for many centuries. The power that the castle radiates is more apparent than reality. In fact it is an imitation of a medieval castle. The thin walls would not have withstood a siege. Such a castle is usually called a wings castle. Behind the castle a historic garden has been laid out as it also existed around 1700.

Château Marquette

Marquette Castle was called Huis te Heemskerk until 1611. Daniel van Hertaing, Lord of Marquette in Hainaut, was then officially given permission to change the name. The castle was so drastically rebuilt around 1740 that not much of the medieval house remained.
