The route starts at Brasserie Zo Jouwe. You will enjoy an extensive lunch here, after which you will hop on your saddle and cycle through the Pettemerduinen. It is also nice to travel for miles in the vast polder land with its high Dutch skies. In the heart of Schagen you will see the Christoforus Church from 1883. The towers of Schagen Castle date from the Middle Ages. In this region you will see characteristic bell-shaped farms here and there. In the hamlet of Valkkoog you pass the beautiful sixteenth-century village church. Then you drive through Stroet, the Old Frisian word for swampy. Further on you will pass De Groenvelder, a thatched polder mill from 1572. In Burgervlotbrug you will see one of the five remaining raft bridges in the Netherlands. At Restaurant de Watersnip you are welcome for a delicious meal, after which you cycle back to Petten.

Molen De Groenvelder

Molen De Groenvelder is a polder mill from 1571 with an oak back. The mill drained the Valkkoog polder, a drainage area of approximately 497 hectares. Within this polder was the Westerendspolder, which had its own drainage system. In the first half of the 20th century, a wind motor was used to drain the southern part of the polder, but this wind motor disappeared as a result of land consolidation. Today, the mill is still regularly used for the drainage of the polder, together with an electric screw pump.
