Description
Take a nice walk along the Veerse Meer and discover the beautiful nature reserves and small towns on the edge of the water. During this tour you will walk over the Veerse Gatdam deltaworks with beautiful views of the water on both sides of the dam.
The Veerse Gatdam
At the start of this walk you immediately walk over the Veerse Gatdam, an impressive delta work. This dam was constructed around 1961 together with the Zandkreekdam to close off the former Veerse Gat from the sea. Since then, the Veerse Meer has been a popular place for sailors, surfers and other water sports enthusiasts. The dam consists of a row of dunes that gives you the idea that you are on the beach when you walk around here. From here you set course for the fortress town of Veere. Take a look at this town and discover the rich history that is closely intertwined with the Veerse Gat and the sea.

Due to the construction of the Veerse Gatdam, the salt water of the Veerse Meer became brackish. In order to maintain the water quality, the Katse Heule was constructed at the time, which connects the Veerse Meer with the Oosterschelde. As a result, salt water flows into the Veerse Meer again. There are also 17 islands in the lake. Many of these islands are accessible, but some areas are reserved for bird habitat.
