Description
The Twente essen landscape is perfect hiking area. You walk along bushes, heaths, meadows and fields that are surrounded by wooded banks.
Reutum lock
The route starts at Erve Deperman, a homely B&B. From here you walk to the Almelo-Nordhorn canal, which you follow for a while. The nineteenth-century canal was closed to shipping as early as 1960, but now you can enjoy the peace and nature. Near the Weerselo-Reutum road you will pass the Reutumse Sluis: a linked narrow lock with an iron drawbridge. Then you continue to the tourist village of Reutum.
Reutum Weuste
This route also leads you through the Reutumer Weuste, an old marsh forest. A special discovery. The heart of the area has always been forested. You mainly see the black alder, but also the birch and pedunculate oak. And you can hear numerous songbirds, such as woodcock and nightingale. Stay a night or two in the former deep stable or hay barn at Erve Deperman and enjoy the atmosphere of this monumental heritage!
