Description
The Twente ash landscape is perfect walking area. You walk past groves, heathlands, meadows and fields surrounded by hedgerows.
Rheumatoid Lock
The route starts at Erve Deperman, a homely B&B. From here you walk to the Almelo-Nordhorn canal, which you follow for a while. The nineteenth-century canal was closed to shipping as early as 1960, but you can now enjoy the peace and nature there. At the Weerselo-Reutum road you will pass the Reutumse Sluis: a linked narrow lock with an iron drawbridge. Then you continue to the tourist village of Reutum.
Reutumer Weuste
This route also leads you through the Reutumer Weuste, an old swamp forest. A special discovery. The heart of the area has always been forested. You mainly see black alder, but also birch and pedunculate oak. And you will hear numerous songbirds, such as woodcock and nightingale. Stay another night or two in the former deepening stable or hay barn at Erve Deperman and enjoy the atmosphere of this monumental heritage!
