Walking through the Drents-Friese Wold

Put on your walking shoes for a wonderful walk through the Drents-Friese Wold. This route takes you through the northern, Frisian part of this national park.

Quiet area
From the parking lot in Appelscha you walk into the Drents-Friese Wold. This is one of the largest contiguous nature reserves in the Netherlands. And you notice that. The deeper you walk into the woods, the quieter it gets. You will see Scots pines, oaks and beech. A wonderful forest to charge the battery.

Outdoor Center
When you walk out of the forest, you are on the edge of the Aekingerbroek: a soaking wet swamp area where the stream Vledder Aa originates. A little later you walk onto the Aekingerzand, a vast shifting sand area where wind and weather have free rein. It is wonderful to walk here in this rugged, wide landscape. The area is grazed by a herd of sheep. At Terwisscha you pass the outdoor center of the Drents-Friese Wold.
