Walking at Hengstdijk

From the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen village of Hengstdijk you can take a walk around nature reserve De Vogel. Put on your walking shoes and come and enjoy the peace and natural beauty.

Old Hengstdijk
You walk through the village of Hengstdijk that once had an open connection with the Western Scheldt. The village is located on a twelfth-century dike and was poldered by Flemish monks. In the village you can admire the Saint Catherine Church. It dates from 1892, but its predecessor was built just after the poldering.

Bird Creek
The Vogelkreek is one of the oldest creeks in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Before the reclamation of Hengstdijk it was a tidal channel where water from the Western Scheldt flowed in and out twice a day. You can spot many water birds there. Just outside Kuitaart you will see Klein Vogel on the left, which also belonged to the original tidal channel. You pass Vogelzicht, a polder mill from 1865. On the Meerdijk you walk past Huis Lettenburg, a monumental country estate that originally dates from the seventeenth century.
