Monumental city gates (including even a water gate!), the ancient Bovenkarspel: in and around Enkhuizen you will find what you are looking for as a history lover. The starting point is the nice varied recreation area the Streekbos.
Historic gates
In Enkhuizen you will find sixteenth-century water gates, such as De Oude Gouwsboom. This gate in the fortress wall provides access to the city via the water. You walk through the beautiful old Enkhuizen with its canals to the harbor. Here you can take a break and eat or drink something at Stationscafé de Haven van Enkhuizen. From the terrace at the back you have a beautiful view over the masts in the marina.
Stede Broek
Then you set course again for the well-preserved rampart. Here you will find the city gate the Koepoort, also such a picture. Bovenkarspel, a little further on, is centuries old: it was part of the farming town of Stede Broek, which was already mentioned in the 7th century. You will soon be back at your starting point, Recreation area Het Streekbos. A wonderfully varied walking area with woods, water and meadows. Maybe you still have time for the beach!
