Your route starts at Bike Totaal Kruijswijk Tweewielers in Castricum. You will soon enter the North Holland Dune Reserve, one of the Netherlands' largest nature reserves. If you would like to know more about this special area, first drop by the De Hoep Visitor Center. The route leads right past it. Special windmills can be seen in the hinterland. A beautiful cycle path leads you straight through the dunes to the nineteenth-century Varnebroek mill. The nine-meter-high mill was temporarily moved from its place a few years ago due to a restoration by a mill builder. With a new mortar and new rods it stands proud again. Along the banks of the Limmergat and the Uitgeestermeer you drive back to Castricum, past the Woudaap: a beautiful polder mill from 1651.

Fort bij Marken-Binnen is located on a piece of 'old land' in the Starnmeerpolder in the northwestern front of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. The fort was built in the Markerpolder, two meters higher up, on the spot where the water de Stierop and the Markervaart meet. Both waterways offered enemy troops the opportunity to invade the Defense Line by boat via the Alkmaardermeer. Fort Marken-Binnen had to defend this access. The fort was completed in 1905 and could house more than 300 soldiers. In the engineer's shed there was room for an additional 75 soldiers. This warehouse was demolished after the Second World War. The shed was rebuilt in its full glory in 2006-2007. The fort and the engineer shed now house a training center for fire brigade and company emergency response.
