In the surroundings of Achterberg you can enjoy beautiful walks through the former peat area. You will find natural beauty, tranquility and a special building: Castle Heimerstein.
The Grift
From the village you can walk into the countryside with its wide polders. You immediately experience a refreshing tranquility here, just like along the banks of De Grift: a canal that was dug in 1480 to transport the cut peat from Veenendaal to the Rhine.
Utrecht Hill Ridge
The Grift partly follows the course of a former peat river, so that it meanders wonderfully. Many pollard willows grow on the banks. From the path you look out over bird-rich meadows, in the distance you can see the forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Castle Heimerstein is located at the foot of the Grebbeberg. The original castle was completely destroyed during the Battle of the Grebbeberg in 1940. The castle was rebuilt in 1946, albeit not in the old style.
