Provided by: Noordertuin van Antwerpen
The rural area of Essen, Belgium, is a true hiking paradise. You will find picturesque spots and benches to enjoy the peace and quiet.
Kempen landscape
The route starts near the hamlet of Essenhoek. The landscape here has been shaped over the centuries by peat extraction and subsequent agriculture. Here you walk between grasslands and fields that are intersected by several streams. Along the way you will pass some farms and field chapels. In short, a characteristic Kempen landscape! In Essen there is a beautiful former hunting water house from 1877 at Moerkantsebaan 48.
Heavenly
Further on you pass through Hemelrijk, a road where there are several monumental farms and houses. The former quarantine stables where cattle imported from the Netherlands were checked for infectious diseases between 1896 and 1968 are also located here. A little later you walk right over the border of the Netherlands and Belgium. You pass Border Post 24, then you will see Domain De Belder on your left, a privately owned estate. In the Middle Ages this was still a desolate area where robbers liked to hide.
