The Land of Altena is a historic region in the north of Brabant. Cycling in this sparsely populated area between the rivers is wonderfully peaceful.
Loevestein Castle
The route starts at Fort Vuren, one of the nicest forts of the New Dutch Waterline. You are welcome here for an excellent cup of coffee, lunch or dinner. You can cross the Waal by ferry to Loevestein Castle from 1361, one of the most beautiful castles in the Netherlands. In the museum you will learn more about the long and turbulent history of Loevestein. Hugo de Groot's escape by bookcase in particular appeals to the imagination.
Dussen Castle
In addition to peace and space, you will also find many sights on the Land of Altena, such as characteristic old farms. You also pass Dussen Castle, which originally dates from the fourteenth century. Further on you will come across two polder mills from 1700: the Oude Doornse Molen and the Vervoorne Molen. In the fortified city of Gorinchem you can enjoy the historic atmosphere in the old city center. Back at Fort Vuren it's time for a snack!
