The Land van Altena is a historical region in the north of Brabant. In this sparsely populated area between the rivers it is wonderfully quiet cycling.
Loevestein Castle
The route starts at Fort Vuren, one of the cosiest forts of the New Dutch Waterline. You are welcome here for an excellent cup of coffee, lunch or dinner. With a ferry you cross the Waal to Slot Loevestein from 1361, one of the most beautiful castles in the Netherlands. In the museum you can learn more about the long and turbulent history of Loevestein. Especially the escape of Hugo de Groot per book chest appeals to the imagination.
Dussen Castle
In the Land van Altena you will find peace and space as well as many sights, such as characteristic old farms. You will also pass Dussen Castle, originally dating from the fourteenth century. Further on you will come across two polder mills from 1700: the Oude Doornse Molen and the Vervoorne Molen. In the fortified town of Gorinchem you can enjoy the historical atmosphere in the old city centre. Back at Fort Vuren it is time for a snack!
