The Land of Altena is a historic region in the north of Brabant. In this sparsely populated area between the rivers it is wonderfully quiet cycling.
The route starts at Fort Vuren, one of the nicest forts of the New Dutch Waterline. You are welcome here for an excellent cup of coffee, lunch or dinner. With a ferry you cross the Waal to Slot Loevestein from 1361, one of the most beautiful castles in the Netherlands. In the museum you will learn more about the long and turbulent history of Loevestein. Hugo de Groot's escape by book chest in particular appeals to the imagination.
In the Land of Altena you will find, in addition to peace and space, many places of interest, such as characteristic old farms. You will also pass Dussen Castle, which originally dates from the fourteenth century. Further on you will come across two polder mills from 1700: the Oude Doornse Molen and the Vervoorne Molen. In the fortified town of Gorinchem you can enjoy the historic atmosphere in the old town. Back at Fort Vuren, it's time for a snack!
