Cycling through the Groningen Highlands

The Hogeland is located in Northeast Groningen: a region that is relatively high due to the silted sea clay. Get on the saddle and come and enjoy the old cultural landscape in this authentic region.

Pancratius Church
The route starts at Lentemaheerd. This overnight address was voted Best VeKaBo guest accommodation in the Netherlands in 2015. In the Hogeland you cycle through a wide landscape of grasslands and arable lands, maars and authentic wierden villages with centuries-old churches. Under the high skies it is wonderfully quiet. And you can get a breath of fresh air while driving over the winding dikes. In Godlinze you will pass the thirteenth-century Pancratius Church, which was built in Romano-Gothic style.

During the route you will also pass through the idyllic wierde village of Westeremden. Here the famous painter Henk Helmantel has a museum in the Weem, a fully renovated presbytery from the Middle Ages. Step off to take a look here.

Menkemaborg
In the heart of Loppersum you will find a characteristic atmosphere thanks to the beautiful monumental buildings. Here you can see, among other things, the largest village church in Groningen and the Stormvogel, a beautiful corn mill from 1849. At junction 65 in Uithuizen, go a little to the left for a visit to the Menkemaborg, one of the most beautiful of the seventeen still existing Groninger borgen.
