A visit to the Zwin

This route takes you to the cross-border nature reserve Het Zwin, the former estuary that connected Bruges with the North Sea. You also cycle through Sluis, Cadzand and the Flemish polders near Knokke.

Fortress town of Sluis
The route starts at the Belgian North Sea in the town of Knokke-Heist. You cycle through the polder to the border with the Netherlands. Here you pass through the medieval fortified town of Sluis. Feel free to take a detour to view the old center. The biggest eye-catcher is the fourteenth-century town hall, the only belfry in the Netherlands. From the top of the tower you have an unprecedented view of the surroundings.

The Zwin
The Zuidzandse Molen is a flour mill from 1874. Here you see the Nooitgedacht, a flour mill from 1898. The Maria Church is an example of Scheldt Gothic, the building dates from the fourteenth century. After the former garrison town of Retranchement, Het Zwin awaits you: a unique nature reserve. Get off here for a moment to enjoy the silence.
