The Eilandspolder is a centuries-old swampy old peat area. From the dikes you can see the Dutch landscape from the time before the reclamation.
A little later you look out from the dike over the Eilandspolder on the left. An area rich in birds with many small canals, copses and a few wide waterways. On the right you look out over the Beemster, the polder that was reclaimed by hydraulic engineer Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater and is on the World Heritage List.
The route also takes you through some beautiful villages, such as Grootschermer, Noordeinde and Graft, which was still a port in the Golden Age. You can see some beautiful monuments here, such as ancient town halls. You will also pass the Monument Willem Woestenburg & Lou Beumer. In early 1945, these resistance fighters tried to rescue the surviving airmen from a crashed English plane. They were caught by the Germans and killed in a shooting spree.
