Description
Located on the Deurnesche Peel nature reserve and close to the former peat colonies of Helenaveen and Griendtsveen, Natuurpoort De Peel offers access to a unique wetland area on the border of North Brabant and Limburg. A varied landscape of lakes, plains, bushes and sandy ridges. Moreover, it is one of the richest bird areas in Western Europe and a beautiful cycling area with a rich history of peat extraction.
The landscape of the Peel can be read like a history book. Most of the peat bog was excavated by peat cutters and sold as'the gold of the Peel\\\'. The traces of this are still everywhere. This is also the case in Griendtsveen, with its old village pumps, drawbridges, straight peel channels and characteristic buildings. Now the Peel is a paradise for nature lovers with a landscape of water, moors and sandy ridges. The wetland area attracts more than a hundred species of breeding and migratory birds.
