The Gelderse Poort through

This route takes you through the Gelderse Poort region: a series of beautiful nature reserves along the Waal River. Besides the natural beauty, you'll also enjoy the many sights.

From the Waal Bridge , you have a beautiful view of the area you'll be cycling in. You'll see how the Waal River meanders through the landscape, and how the moraine rises near Nijmegen. On the dikes in Groenlanden and Millingerwaard, you can enjoy a breath of fresh air and gaze out over the rugged landscape. In the polder, you'll see authentic terp farms, a reminder of a time when the dikes offered less protection against rising river waters.

Picturesque Bemmel. A small ferry takes you across the river. Here too, the views are magnificent. Near Gendt, you cycle past the fifteenth-century gate tower of Poelwijk Castle, demolished in 1864. In Bemmel, you'll see the beautiful, partially white-plastered Reformed Church. Further on stands De Kinkelenburg: part of the manor house still recalls its fifteenth-century origins as a keep.
