With this route you get the best of both worlds. You cycle through the open polder landscape of the Kromme Rijnstreek with its castles and fruit orchards. You also come through the woods on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
From the polder you can see the church tower of Werkhoven appearing on the horizon. Just outside the village you will pass Beverweerd Castle. Originally this house dates from the thirteenth century, the current building dates from 1850. Furthermore, Sterkenburg Castle, an originally fortified tower that has been converted into a country house.
It takes a bit of climbing to drive up the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, but you get a lot in return: an extensive woodland and heathland area in which it is wonderfully quiet cycling. Winding for miles on sloping paths between deciduous and coniferous trees, what a cycling party! Just before you enter the vast polder land of the Kromme Rijnstreek again, you pass the stately Slot Zeist.
