Wijk bij Duurstede, Utrecht, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 576103
Provided by: Groots Genieten
With this route you get the best of both worlds. You cycle through the open polder landscape of the Kromme Rijnstreek with its castles and orchards. You will also pass through the woods on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
Castles
From the polder you can see the church tower of Werkhoven appear on the horizon. Just outside the village you pass Kasteel Beverweerd. This residence originally dates from the thirteenth century, the current building dates from 1850. Furthermore, Castle Sterkenburg, an originally fortified tower that has been converted into a country house.
Utrecht Hill Ridge
It is a bit of a climb to drive up the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, but you get a lot in return: a vast forest and heath area in which it is wonderfully quiet to cycle. Winding for miles on sloping paths between the deciduous and coniferous trees, what a cycling party! Just before you enter the vast polder land of the Kromme Rijnstreek again, you pass the stately Slot Zeist.
