Little remains to suggest that life here looked completely different some 500 years ago. The water-rich area through which this walk winds has a turbulent history. An army went on a plundering spree here, resulting in bloody scenes. One of the silent witnesses to such a raid was found here not so long ago, in a seemingly ordinary field. A treasure of 100 silver coins, likely hidden at this spot by a fleeing merchant...

The Kleine Beerze has always been there. But the people who worked, lived, and passed through this river changed. This 9-kilometer walk takes you through the Baest Estate, a place where, five centuries ago, you had to be very wary of robbers. Walking right along the Kleine Beerze, you enter the green stream valley. Just south of the village of Oostelbeers, you pass a mysterious tower: situated in the middle of the landscape, surrounded by trees and a shooting range, but without a church or monastery. There once was a church there, though. Take a closer look at the tower.

For a cup of coffee or tea and a well-deserved break, there are plenty of suitable places to eat and drink in picturesque Middelbeers. From there, the tour continues along the waters of the Kleine Beerze. Here you will encounter plenty of other living creatures: both in the wild and behind barbed wire. The final part of the walk leads once again through the Baest Estate; a beautiful area with leafy walking paths, making it one of the most beautiful walking areas in this region. Commotion in a now so quiet place

In 2022, a hoard of 100 silver coins was discovered on the Baest Estate. The coin hoard was possibly buried in a hedgerow by an unknown person around 1540. In 1542, Field Marshal Maarten van Rossum marched and plundered through the stream valley of the Kleine Beerze with his army, passing over the Baest Estate as well.

Did a frightened peddler see the looters approaching and quickly hide his money bag? Was he murdered by Maarten van Rossum's soldiers? Or did he manage to escape and follow the route that leads past the Old Tower from here? Perhaps the peddler found a safe haven at that spot? The true story will remain a mystery. What is certain is that the unknown person never unearthed his coin hoard...
