This 48 kilometer route takes you past the most beautiful places in Weert and Nederweert. History lovers in particular will enjoy this route full of historical gems, but nature lovers are also in the right place in this area.
Centuries-old urnfields
The start and end point of this route is at the Bi-j Siem Bicycle Terrace, a beautiful building where the owners continue the age-old tradition with a modern twist. Drink a nice cup of coffee here and then get on your bike. From here you set course for the De IJzeren Man nature reserve, which is located near Weert. In this area you have many recreational options such as: a campsite, a climbing forest, a Nature and Environmental Center and much more. Worth stopping here for a moment. Then you cycle on to the prehistoric urn fields on the Boshoverheide. This field is a protected national monument and is one of the largest prehistoric urnfields in Western Europe. Get off your bike and take a look at these special burial mounds from 1050 to 400 BC. It is estimated that more than 3,000 dead are buried here.
The Weerterbos
Then you cycle further through the Hugterheide and over the Weerterbos . This forest is located in Nederweert and consists of woodland, heathland and grasslands. After cycling more than 23 kilometers, you can take a break at Huyskamer Daatjeshoeve to enjoy a tasty snack and a drink. A little further on you will pass the St. Joseph mill and the Limburg Open Air Museum Eynderhoof. This museum consists of historic buildings where 375 volunteers demonstrate old crafts and customs to the public. Take a look around here and imagine yourself in times gone by.
Canals Vierhoek - Lock 15
Once you have cycled across the canal, you will arrive at Lock 15. This lock and hydroelectric power station was built in the 1920s. This lock replaced the old lock, which was placed during the digging of the canal between Wessem and Nederweert. Near the lock is the old Nederweert hydroelectric power station , a special monument. The power plant is owned by Rijkswaterstaat and is managed by the Roeven Nederweert Hydroelectric Power Plant Foundation.
A unique mill
A little further along the route you will also cycle past the Windlust mill, the only mill in Limburg that produces oil. The mill is therefore unique in its kind. Because the mill operates regularly, you can make an appointment to view the mill. You end your tour again at Bi-j Siem, where you can recover from this beautiful tour.
