Stadsmolen

Leiden

The most famous windmill type in the Netherlands. Windmills were not only used to produce flour from cereals, but also for draining polder areas. Natural energy. The most famous windmills can be found in Kinderdijk, which have truly been set up as a polder model. A must see!

Broekdijkmolen

Broekdijkmolen 1
2360 AA Leiden

The Broekdijkmolen in Warmond is an octagonal wooden polder mill built in 1862, which replaced a burnt-down octagonal mill from 1840. In 1972 the mill went downhill during a storm and could be stopped with difficulty. The following night, however, the mill burned down, probably as a result of overheating. The municipality of Haarlem offered an octagonal mill as a replacement. This could not be kept in its place in the Waarderpolder due to the expansion of an industrial estate. The mill was transferred in its entirety to Warmond and appeared to fit on the masonry substructure. The mill was installed in 1974; the restoration lasted until 1976. Until 1979, the Broekdijk mill was owned by the polder, then by the Oude Veenen water board and now by the Rijnlandse Molenstichting, which also supervised the 1976 reconstruction. The mill now drains the Broek en Simontjes polder on a voluntary basis. The mill is a national monument.

Park Groot Leerust

’t Huys Groot Leerust 1
2361 AA Teylingen

Buitenplaats Groot Leerust is surrounded by a beautiful garden. Today, this backyard of the historic mansion is freely accessible as Park Groot Leerust. In 1953 the private garden was opened to visitors as a public park. The current park is the remainder of a once much larger landscape style park. Take a stroll through this beautiful garden and enjoy the view of the windmill of the Zwanburgerpolder and the Leede. On nice days you can see one boat after another passing by on the Kagerplassen. In the garden you will also find centuries-old trees and numerous birds, but also a charming tea dome that was built in 1815 and of course the country house from 1717. Groot Leerust was originally built on the basis of a farm. In the current house parts of that old farm have been incorporated here and there.

The Hogeveensemolen is a ground sailor that was built in 1654. Diagonally opposite this mill you will find the Lageveense Molen. During the construction of the Leidsevaart, this mill was left in its original location. In 1924 an engine was placed in this mill, but this engine had to be replaced in 1930 because it turned out not to work properly. Furthermore, the mill did not run from 1978 to 1985 because the condition of the blades was not good. The mill was subsequently restored between 1985 and 2003.

De witte Kerk

Witte kerk 7
2211 GA Noordwijk

The white church in Noordwijkerhout is the icon of this village. Around 1300 a parish church was built in Noordwijkerhout intended for Roman Catholic worship. This church has been burned down and renovated several times. In 1508, the church was thoroughly renovated and the blunt tower roof replaced by a slender spire. In 1573 the church was destroyed by fire and the church was assigned to the Reformed. The church is currently owned by the Dutch Reformed Congregation. There is a service every Sunday at 10 am. If you look closely, you will see the different stones under the white paint. This shows that the church has been renovated and restored several times. The low windows at the side of the ship can still be seen where villagers with contagious diseases could once have been able to attend mass. Do the window bars in the tower.

Paddenpoel

9
2333 AS Leiden

The oldest mention of the Paddenpoel castle dates from about 1250. The first Paddenpoel castle was completely destroyed on 12 November 1393 as a reaction to the murder of Aleid van Poelgeest. Around 1396 a reconciliation took place after which the Paddenpoel castle was allowed to be rebuilt. The castle, probably formed from a fortified farm and hunting lodge, consisted of a heavy tower, keep with lower walls as a rectangle around it. Perhaps the later castle, from 1405 to 1420, was larger and also consisted of a second part: an outer castle with more living areas, stables, etc. The main castle was connected to the outer castle by a drawbridge over a moat.
