Enjoy cycling along the water: from the North Sea to the Western Scheldt. Along the way you will also discover the many creeks in the polder. Small villages complete the route. A beautiful varied bike ride, perfect for a summer day.
From Nieuwvliet-Bad you quickly cycle into Nieuwvliet-Dorp, which was founded around 1600. Both villages are popularly called Sinte Pier. This area is strongly influenced by Flanders and you can hear that! You continue cycling along the Nieuwkerksche Kreek, which was created during the Eighty Years' War. Pro-state troops crossed the dikes to stop the Spaniards. The plan succeeded, but entire villages disappeared under the waves. Including Nieuwerkerke, the namesake of the creek.
You cycle further via small villages in the Zeeland polder, over endless country roads and winding dikes along wet grasslands and meandering streams. The trees are always slightly out of alignment, buffeted by the wind from an early age. You drive to Breskens, a real maritime city with its own fishing port and modern marina. A little later you cycle along the mouth of the Western Scheldt to the North Sea coast. It's wonderful to watch boats here!
