A wonderful discovery tour of the beautiful Marken. This small island is still very authentic and has many beautiful places. With this route you see them all! This beautiful walking route across Marken leads you past all the beautiful places. Until 1957 this was still a real island, when the dike was built that connects Marken to the mainland. In the Middle Ages, Marken was inhabited by monks from Friesland. Later it grew into a fishing village, complete with wharves and characteristic wooden houses on stilts. Marken really still feels like an island, you will soon notice that when you set off. The most beautiful spot on your route is Het Paard van Marken, the striking lighthouse from 1839.

The Paard van Marken is the lighthouse of Marken. The lighthouse was designed by J. Valk and built in 1839 and is located on the eastern tip of the island. The tower has a height of 16 meters and a light range of 16.7 km. The tower started as a square beacon in 1700. Later buildings were built on the lighthouse, which gave the tower its characteristic shape. In 1814 the tower received a mist bubble. The round tower was built in 1839 on the foundation of the beacon. In 1919, the fog bell was replaced by a fog horn. The lighthouse regularly suffers from drifting ice. In 1971, this was so bad that the tower was pushed a few inches from its place. The lighthouse is currently inhabited and has been listed as a national monument since 1970.
