Description
Farm't Wit hof
At the start of this walk you will immediately pass a beautiful sight: St. John's Church in Helkijn. Then you walk through a rural area full of fields, meadows and old farms. You will pass Hoeve't Wit hof, among other things. This historic farm was built here in the 17th century on behalf of the bishops of Tournai. The farm is protected as a monument.
From Spiere to Helkijn
After walking more than 8 kilometers you arrive in Spiere. Here you will find the Spiere Lock Complex and the Old Spiere Swimming Pool. From Spiere you walk back to the starting point of the route in Helkijn. Along the way you will pass Hoeve Maes'la Folie\\\', a farm from 1630.
The Spiere lock complex
At Spiere you used to find a large meander of the Scheldt. This bend in the Scheldt made it difficult for ships to sail here. The meander was straightened in 1920 and a lock was also built during that period. The lock bridges a height difference of about two meters. Take a look here and see how ships sail through the lock.
