It gets its name from the vast sandy wasteland of which it was once part. Yet the Groote Zand consists of much more than drifting sand. It is a varied heath landscape. It is remarkable that the wettest parts of the terrain are often higher than the drier parts. The very local occurrence of boulder clay in the subsoil, which prevents the water from sinking, is an explanation for this. The area is freely accessible on roads and trails. The circular pole walk starts from the parking lot at the Westerbork Memorial Center. This leads through both the Groote Zand and the adjacent forestry. Source text: The Drenthe Landscape
