Description

Welcome to South Limburg and especially to the municipality of Kerkrade.
Get on your bike and take a trip through the mining past in South Limburg. Along the way you will be taken along the most beautiful places that remind you of Limburg's illustrious mining past. In various places you will find 'time windows' with an impression of what it used to look like at those historical locations.

Rolduc Abbey and the Worm Valley
You start the route at Rolduc Abbey. This Abbey played a major role in the development of Dutch coal mining. You drive through the Beerenbosch, past the Baalsbruggermolen and through the Wormdal. The Worm Valley is sometimes called the cradle of European mining.

A little further on you cycle past the Rimburg Water Tower and Rimburg Castle. The route then takes you past the Julia mine (Eygelshoven), the Laethof (the old town hall at the time of mining operations) and a mining monument. You then pass the Wilhelminaberg Landgraaf and the Kerkrade Botanical Garden.

The Wilhelminaberg
This mountain originated from the slag heap of Staatsmijn Wilhelmina. Put your bike aside and climb the stairs to the top of the mountain to enjoy a beautiful view!

Strijthagen Castle
Between Landgraaf and Kerkrade you cycle through the forests of the Strijthagen nature reserve. In the middle of this area you will find Strijthagen Castle. The original castle on this site dates from the 13th century, but in the 18th century that structure was replaced by the current castle. Over the centuries, the castle has suffered from mine damage, requiring several restorations.

The end point of this route is on the edge of Kerkrade, at Rolduc Abbey. You can go to this beautiful and centuries-old abbey for a cup of coffee, lunch or dinner and you can also spend the night there. You can also easily park here.
