Doetinchem is a pleasant town to explore by bike. In the outlying area you drive through an old cultural landscape of streams, forests and hedgerows.
Slangenburg estate
You drive a bit through Landgoed Slangenburg, which consists of a beautiful mix of forests and cultivated lands. In the spring, the blooming rhododendrons are a feast for the eyes. The avenue system is unique for the Netherlands because of its scale and authenticity.
Castle Ruurlo
Ruurlo Castle is a country estate dating from 1326. Now it is a museum where you can admire paintings by Carel Willink. Get off at De Heikamp for a well-deserved pancake, because De Heikamp is Dutch Pancake Baking Champion! Shortly after you have passed the Wittebrinksemolen from 1889, you drive along the Kruisbergse Bossen to Doetinchem. Little is left of the historic city center due to a bombardment by the Allies in 1945. They thought they had hit the German city of Isselburg.
