Marker lake
You will soon be cycling along the Markermeer. It was once part of the wild Zuiderzee, but now the water has been tamed. You can get a breath of fresh air and enjoy the views over the water. Further on you drive through a typical open polder landscape with canals, ditches and high skies. On the horizon you regularly see a church perky.

Just outside Hoorn you will pass De Krijgsman, a windmill with a remarkable history. In 1602 a mill was built here, which blew down in 1860. Its replacement, De Krijgsman, which was completed in 1862, burned down in 1896 due to a lightning strike. The current mill is a hulling mill from 1751 that was re-erected on this site and given the same name. It's been there for a while, let's hope the tide has turned for De Krijgsman!
