A day in the woods on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug is never boring. Certainly not when there are so many sights to see such as stately villas and old fortresses!

Utrecht Hill Ridge
You will soon enter the vast nature of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. A wonderfully varied environment of deciduous and coniferous forests, heathlands and drifting dunes. The hilly landscape offers you surprising vistas every now and then. What makes this area extra special is the almost un-Dutch silence. And of course the grandeur of the many country houses and villas that have been built here over the centuries.

Fort Blauwkapel
At junction 55 you can take a trip to the National Military Museum at Soesterberg Air Base. Further on you will pass two other military sights: Fort Voordorp and Fort Blauwkapel, which was built in 1821 around the village of Blauwkapel. Blauwkapel only lost its military function in the 1960s, it is now a protected townscape. In the village, the fifteenth-century church Den Blauwen Capel is still in use.
