From Oudewater you drive a beautiful route through the vast peat area in the Green Heart. A tour with many open landscapes and towns such as Montfoort, IJsselstein and Nieuwegein.
Cycling along the Hollande IJssel is wonderful. Here you will see extensive grasslands and monumental farms. It is remarkably quiet in this region. Delicious! In the old Montfoort you pass the iconic town hall with the IJsselpoort, a beautiful monument from the fourteenth century. You will also pass the Sint-Janskerk from 1500. In the Molenstraat you can still see the remains of the old city wall. You will also pass De Valk, a polder mill from 1753.
IJsselstein is also well worth a visit. In the historic center you imagine yourself in the Middle Ages. In the polder you pass Lopikerkapel, a picturesque ribbon village. Between junctions 84 and 54 you will again see many ancient farms. What a beautiful area!
Have some time and energy left? Then drive through Oudewater, the oldest town in the Green Heart. You can see, among other things, the fifteenth-century Grote of St. Michael's Church. The town hall with its Renaissance facade, built in 1588, is also a sight to behold. Just like the Waag from 1482: in this building you can see an exhibition about the persecution of witches. At the time, many outdoor shots were made in and around Oudewater for the TV series Swiebertje: there is also a bust of this bum.
