Appelbergen was once a military training area. Now you walk through a nature reserve that consists of forests, heathland, peat remains and swamps. Because the wasteland here has never been reclaimed, you will also see some drifting sand hills. From the forest you walk across the Glimmer Es. Here you will find a tree nursery and the northernmost vineyard in the Netherlands. The road over the es is the old church path to Noordlaren. The Quintusbos is a bird-rich walking forest that is laid out in the English landscape style. The forest is the legacy of Roelof Antonius Quintus who lived on this former estate in the nineteenth century. From the forest you walk past Weltevreden, a monumental country house from 1806. Further on is the former sarshut (official's house) from the eighteenth century. The route ends at Paviljoen Appelbergen.
