This cycling tour is all about freedom, but also about the war history of the
Utrechtse Heuvelrug . When you stop and think about a war memorial, you often realize how special our freedom is. Let yourself be taken along traces from the wartime and feel as free as a bird in the lush forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
The military plot in Rhenen
Then we get on our e-bikes to get acquainted with the historic center of Rhenen, where we cycle through, among other things, under a beautiful gate, which is characteristic of the style of the Delft school in the city center. Afterwards, we literally stop at the military plot in Rhenen, where victims of the memorable battle of the Grebbeberg are buried. Two employees of the De Greb Foundation tell us more about what happened here on May 10, 1940.
Cycling through the woods
We then cycle through the polders to Fort aan de Buursteeg, one of the main defenses of the Grebbe Line, and past Renswoude Castle. Then it is time for a short break with a snack and a drink at Restaurant De Dennen. Then the time has come to explore the beautiful forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. After about 50 kilometers of cycling we stop at De Kaap Lookout Tower. Climb this tower to enjoy a beautiful view. A little further on we make time for a nice lunch at Châlet Helenaheuvel.
Castle splendor on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug
On the last part of the route we cycle past numerous castles and estates. At Museum Huis Doorn we stop for a bit of history and continue cycling past the Broekhuizen Estate and Amerongen Castle. We end our day at Moeke Rhenen, near the starting point of the route in Rhenen. There you will hear, while enjoying a snack and a drink, why the name Cunera is inextricably linked with Rhenen. You also have a beautiful view of the Lower Rhine and the Betuwe from here.
